A Sheep's Life

Animal welfare is a high priority. So, ethical twist source wool from Port Edgar Organic Farm in the Falklands - run by Tex and Mandy Alazia and their three daughters. Here the sheep live on a beautiful green field site, are free from outside parasites and so do not have to be dipped with potentially harmful chemicals.

Port Edgar Organic Farm (which was the first farm to achieve Organic status on the Falklands) covers 16,800 hectares including small Tussac islands and fenced off areas dedicated to wildlife, fauna & flora. They run 6,000 sheep on mostly natural moorland and mountain type pastures. No chemical fertiliser has ever been used on the farm and no A.I. (artificial insemination) or E.T. (embryo transfer) has been used in the flock.

Weaned lambs go back into the flock as replacements, none are sold into the meat industry. Organic to Tex and Mandy is not just about farming practices but a total way of life, for instance, they use wind power to generate electricity for use across the farm.

Once pressed, Tex and Mandy put wool bales onto the ship (farmers working together as there are no dock workers!) to Montevideo for onward shipment to the UK and ethical twist.
